Tenerife is the largest and most-visited of the seven Canary Islands, offering a unique variety of landscapes including deserts, forests, mountains, volcanoes and beautiful golden coastlines. Despite being little more than a poor banana-growing region up until the 1960’s, the island has flourished as a tourist destination since the arrival of mass air travel. Today, it is an affordable and very family-friendly destination, with a number of inviting resorts, hotels and restaurants.

One of the main appeals of the island is the array of golden beaches on offer, each of which offers an ideal place to soak up the sun all-year-round. While temperatures generally tend to drop across the Mediterranean towards the end of the autumn season, the geographical location of the Canaries ensures they remain warm even through the colder months of December and January.

There is so much more to see than just the beaches, however, with a number of interesting natural landmarks to visit. If you are arriving at the island via an ocean cruise, you will be able to see the snow-capped peak of Mount Teide before you dock. Standing at more than 7,500 metres high, this active volcano is the tallest volcano in Europe when measured from its base on the ocean floor. A journey to the El Teide National Park offers a chance to enjoy a 10-minute cable car ride to the top of the mountain which, in turn, will provide you spectacular panoramic views over the local scenery.

Contrasting to this barren landscape is the Parque Rural de Anaga, which offers a number of beautiful hiking trails through lush-green environments. If you are visiting this region, be sure to take the chance to visit the Pico del Ingles viewpoint – where you can enjoy fantastic sweeping views. It is also worth noting that Tenerife is a popular location for scuba diving, with warmer surrounding waters offering a chance to explore the volcanic rock formations that make up this beautiful island.
