La Gomera

La Gomera is the second smallest of the Canary Islands and is considered by many to be a natural hidden gem. While it is known that each of the Canary Islands has a history of volcanic activity, La Gomera is unique in the sense that it has not seen an eruption for over 2 million years. This has led to the growth of an abundance of exotic flora and fauna that is indigenous to the island, therefore creating a distinctively lush-green environment that you won’t find anywhere else in the archipelago.

There are plenty of hiking trails situated across the island that offer the chance to catch a glimpse the colourful range of flora on display. One of the best places to visit is the Garajonay National Park – an extensive forested area which has recently been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. Within this site, it is possible to climb Alto de Garajonay which, at 1,487 metres above sea level, offers mesmerising 360-degree views over the island and even a chance to glimpse the towering Mount Teide of nearby Tenerife.

While there is no commercial airport on the island, there are ferry connections available departing from Tenerife every day. The ferries depart from Los Cristianos and arrive in the port of San Sebastian La Gomera, which is notable for being where Christopher Columbus began his expedition across the Atlantic. Be sure to keep your eyes open for whales and dolphins, which may make an appearance during your journey.

A short transfer over to Playa de Santiago will take you to the Fred. Olsen-owned Hotel Jardin Tecina, which offers a beautiful place to relax with spacious accommodations, delicious cuisine and the island’s only golf course.
