Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands and is highly regarded for its unique variety of landscapes, distinctive cultural cities and historical landmarks. It is home to Las Palmas, which is not only one of the largest cities of the Canary Islands but also one of the largest in Spain as a whole. With so much to see and do in Las Palmas, this is a great place to start your holiday in Gran Canaria before exploring the rest of this beautiful island.

Triania is one of the most popular areas of the city and is known for its abundance of shops – many of which are housed within historical Art Nouveau buildings. If you are interested in admiring local architecture, you will certainly be impressed by the Cathedral de Santa Ana – a towering landmark that dates back to the 15th century and was the first official church of the Canary Islands. Las Palmas is also known for Playa de las Canteras, which is regarded as one of the best urban beaches in the world. This 4km stretch of golden sands offers a great place to soak up the sun during the day or admire the sunset in the evening.

As previously stated, Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands and there is plenty more to see outside of Las Palmas. There are plenty of hiking opportunities to be enjoyed within the lush-green forested areas of Valsequillo. You will also find many interesting rock formations and a historic centre that is home to an interesting collection of architecture that includes the Church of Saint Michael Archangel, the cavalry barracks and a number of Flemish carvings. Elsewhere on the island, a hike through the mountainous landscapes will offer spectacular views and a chance to visit a number of inhabited cave villages.
